By the early 2000s, Institute Akbar Malaysia (Malaysian Press Institute, MPI) spearheaded an effort to move the industry from top-down regulation to self-regulation.

Pengerusi Yayasan Salam Malaysia, Datuk Ahmad A. Tallib berkata, media arus perdana diasak pelbagai cabaran baharu termasuk ledakan teknologi maklumat dan komunikasi (ICT) serta hak kebebasan bersuara yang sering disalahguna terutamanya dalam media sosial.”

20 February 2018, “Breakthrough in Efforts to Set Up Malaysian Regulatory Press Body”

The WAN-IFRA Media Freedom Committee of Malaysia held a closed-door Editors’ Roundtable in Kuala Lumpur in early February, as a follow up to a similar roundtable that the Committee organised in August last year… The idea of forming an Ombudsperson in Malaysia was initially brought up by editors in the August roundtable and was well received in February’s four-hour discussion.

13 Feb 2018, “Independent ombudsperson mulled for M’sian media industry

“February’s roundtable, which saw the participation of some 15 media editors from print, online, digital, radio and vernacular platforms, discussed the possibility of forming a Press Ombudsperson structure in Malaysia to represent the media as well as to act as a mediator with the government.The idea of forming an Ombudsperson in Malaysia was initially brought up by editors in the August roundtable and was well received in February’s four-hour discussion. An overwhelming majority of editors approved the idea, and this approval will in turn give the Committee the mandate and legitimacy to pursue it in greater depth in the coming months.”

30 May 2018, “Gobind bentang cadangan Majlis Media kepada kabinet tak lama lagi”

“Saya baru saja mengadakan pertemuan dengan ketua-ketua jabatan dan menyampaikan bahawa kita ingin mendapat penyertaan dari pelbagai pihak. Nama dan struktur sebenar siapa yang akan menyertai majlis media ini dan sebagainya belum diputuskan. Ini adalah sesuatu yang saya akan cadangkan kepada kabinet mungkin dalam tempoh dua minggu jika saya boleh.”

5 June 2018 “Penubuhan Majlis Media tidak dapat sambutan di Malaysia”

“Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin mendedahkan penubuhan Majlis Media Malaysia (MMM) yang diamalkan negara demokratik matang, tidak mendapat sambutan oleh pengamal media tempatan. Bagaimanapun, Menteri Dalam Negeri itu tetap komited bahawa kerajaan akan memberikan ruang kepada media untuk menjalankan tugas tanpa sekatan selagi penggiat media bersikap bertangungjawab terhadap laporan mereka.”

10 June 2018: “Press council and good journalism” – Datuk Dr A Murad Merican
“In early 2000, I was involved in deliberating a proposal for a Malaysia Media Council under the auspices of the Malaysian Press Institute. Together with Professor Mohd Safar Hasim of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, I co-authored a report submitted to the government for a self-regulatory mechanism to be set up through Parliament. It was proposed to be a statutory press council… Between the Suhakam sessions of 2002 and 2004, there was a panel discussion organised by the Bar Council on “Independent Functioning of Media Council, Media Freedom and High Media Ethics”. With new media technologies, self-regulation is a worthy goal through this impartial mechanism.”

5 Sept 2018, “Perlu ada mekanisma kawal laporan media”

Menyekat pemilikan media oleh mana-mana parti politik dilihat sebagai langkah terkebelakang yang bertentangan dengan prinsip kebebasan bersuara dalam masyarakat yang mengamalkan demokrasi. Itu pendapat Profesor Pusat Penyelidikan Dasar dan Kajian Antarabangsa, USM, Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Murad Merican yang merasakan apa yang perlu dilakukan kini adalah mewujudkan satu mekanisme untuk mengawal selia segala maklumat yang dikeluarkan oleh media terbabit.
